Voting is your civic duty and allows you to express your political beliefs while making you feel good for being a responsible citizen. While many Americans say that due to the electoral college, your vote doesn’t matter, that is simply not the case. To win electoral votes, presidential candidates must win the popular vote in a given state. When we had the 2000 presidential election, we had to have a recount in Florida to decide if Al Gore or George W. Bush won the state and the corresponding electoral votes. According to constitutioncenter.org, Bush won Florida by 537 popular votes. 537 people decided the outcome of that election. If those people had stayed at home and said, “(clip),” Bush would not have won. I guarantee you that some of the people that did not vote that year did not vote just because they did not feel like it. Those people could have complained about the outcome for the next four years, but it was too late then, because Bush won! Your vote matters and if you do not like the electoral college, do something about it. Go vote for someone that wants to get rid of it. 100 million people who were eligible to vote in 2016, did not vote according to the Washington Post. 60.5 million voted for Clinton, while 60 million voted for Trump who ended up winning the electoral college 304-227. For those of you who can’t stand Trump and did not vote in 2016, we could have gotten a different outcome…. if only you voted. Your vote counts, but you have to make it count. Maybe you didn’t vote because you didn’t like the candidates, but only 28.5% of estimated eligible voters voted in Republican and Democratic presidential primaries. Maybe if you voted in the primaries, your candidate would have won and you would have been able to vote for a better candidate in the presidential race. Everything is political whether you like it or not and the political process decides many things in our lives. For example, if weed is illegal in your state and you want to smoke without legal repercussions then you need to vote for politicians that support legalization even in midterm and local elections. Likewise, if you want to go outside without saying ( clip), then you need to vote for politicians against legalization to reduce that smelly smell. Even if you don’t pay income taxes, you still have to pay sales tax and other taxes and it would be nice to have a say over how the government spends your money. Killing babies will forever be a moral stain on America especially when we fund some of the abortions with taxpayer dollars. The best way to defund Planned Parenthood is to elect the right politicians willing to do that. In regards to gun laws, the real reason the NRA is so powerful is not because of their money, but because of their people. They have 5 million members who are politically active, volunteer in campaigns, attend town halls, contact their politicians, and vote. We cannot give into the notion that extremely high taxes will make us better off or that the world will end in 12 years.(clip) People in California pay 40 percent more than the national average for their energy and the elites can afford that, but these policies make everyone else poorer. Even with their high taxes, California has the country’s highest poverty rate at 20.6%. The high costs of housing due to excessive environmental and land-use policies make it extremely difficult for developers to create affordable housing. All these regulations increase homelessness and California has a homeless population of 134,000. They have about a quarter of the entire country’s homeless population. This is what happens when you don’t elect the right people.
