The Affordable Care Act had an individual mandate that forced all Americans to buy health insurance and imposed fines on them if they did not. Likewise, an employer mandate forced employers to provide health insurance to all their employees if they had 50 or more. They have to give coverage to workers that worked 30 or more hours a week on average. One might hear the terms “49ers” and “29ers” since these are numbers that employers do not want to surpass or else their expenses will go up from having to provide health insurance. Many businesses have laid-off workers, cut their hours, or even hired temporary workers. Due to the rising costs of healthcare, employers need to raise deductibles in order to keep employees’ premiums from rising. Unfortunately, the US has the highest health care costs in the developed world and mediocre health outcomes. About 45,000 Americans die each year from not having access to health care and almost 700,000 become bankrupt due to the high costs.
